St Michael and All Angels, Summertown, Oxford
Anglican Parish Church
Improved community facilities OHCT Grant: £15,000
Built following a design by Alfred Mardon Mowbray (1849-1915) a leading English Gothic Revival architect, the church (Grade II listed) was consecrated in September 1909.
The ambitious plan to create a structure which could house a congregation of 1000 was abandoned due to lack of funds and a ‘temporary’ brick wall, both shortening and closing the west end was installed.
The work recently undertaken is part of ‘The Threshold Project’. The work which started in July 2017 includes a new West end extension in contemporary style, construction of toilets and kitchen. Handover of the finished extension is planned for late February, with the official opening by the Bishop on 22 April 2018.
