Abingdon : Our Lady and St Edmund of Abingdon

About this church

Designed by William Wardell and completed by George Goldie (who took over in 1865). First to be built was the presbytery, an eclectic riot of Gothic revival motifs and features, which was complete by 1855. By 1857 the cloister and part of the church – the chancel and the adjacent chapel to the south – were in place. The nave has identical arcades to the north and south aisles. The capitals are plain stone cylinders. The east window has a panel commemorating Sir George Bowyer’s gifts to the community.
