Swyncombe : St Botolph

Beautifully placed in the Chilterns is this largely untouched small Norman church, built of flint and stone. In the semi-circular apse are traces of early wall-painting.

About this church

A small building of C11 Norman origin.
Building material consists of flint coursed rubble with herringbone work and ashlar limestone dressings. The roof is gabled and of old-tile. It was restored in 1833.
Features include a nave with apsidal chancel. The south wall of the nave contains two C14 two-light windows with a further Early English lancet. The north wall contains lancet windows but these are C19 imitations. There is a C11 round-headed blocked doorway. The carved stone bellcote is also C14.

Interior:
Wall painted decorations within the apse. The chancel contains C19 benches with medieval floor tiles. Most other fixtures and fittings are C19.
