Tadmarton : St Nicholas

The church was originally built in the 12th century but has been much altered since in successive remodellings during the 13th and 14th centuries: the latter phase being especially prominent externally due to the darker ironstone used for the top stage of the bell tower and the nave clerestorey.

About this church

The main survival of the Norman building is the three-bay north nave arcade. The building was enlarged and the bell tower added in the 13th century. The tower has a ring of six bells. Four were originally cast early in the 17th century, but two of these were re-cast in 1923 and 1939. A fifth bell was added in 1761 and the treble was added in 1947. The interior possesses several noteworthy furnishings in the 15th century traceried bench ends and the unusually decorated 13th century font, decorated in an apparently random manner with alternating geometric patterns and swirling vines.
