SUMMARY:Blenheim Lecture 2026: On John Vanbrugh
DESCRIPTION:This year\, the 300th anniversary of his death\, is a fitting opportunity for a Blenheim Lecture on Sir John Vanbrugh\, architect and dramatist.  His best known buildings are\, of course\, Blenheim Palace and Castle Howard.  We are delighted that the well-known architectural historian – architectural editor of Country Life – Dr John Goodall FSA\, has agreed to be our speaker: we can look forward to an authoritative and interesting account of this remarkable figure. \nThis year’s lecture will take place at an earlier time than usual with the aim that the journey home afterwards might be easier: we shall gather from 3:15 pm for the lecture at 3:45.  We shall adjourn after the lecture for drinks in The Orangery and then have our usual buffet.  The event will close by 6:15. \nWe are grateful to be using the Palace as the guests of the  Blenheim Palace Heritage Foundation. \n  \nImage: Sir John Vanbrugh (attrib. to  Thomas Murray)\nCopyright: National Portrait Gallery\, London

SUMMARY:September Church Tour to Otmoor
DESCRIPTION:This year’s September tour\, to three medieval village churches on Otmoor and a 20th-century town church at the edge of Oxford\, has been devised and will be led by Elizabeth Knowles with help from Hilary CakebreadHall. \nWe shall start at St Mary the Virgin\, Charlton-on-Otmoor where we shall gather from 10:15 for a coffee.  This church and our second of the morning\, St Andrew’s Oddington\, both date from the 14th and 15th centuries.  Having seen these two churches\, we shall move for lunch to the Abingdon Arms at Beckley\, after which we’ll see the Church of the Assumption of the BVM at Beckley.  Dating from Romanesque times but now largely 14th/15th-century\, this church boasts fine wall-paintings and some medieval stained glass.  Our fourth and final visit for the day will be to the only example in the county of a church by N. F. Cachemaille-Day (1896-1976)\, St Mary’s\, Barton. \nThe four churches are close to each other\, and so driving distances will be minimal: route instructions will be circulated in the week before the tour.

SUMMARY:Annual Meeting of the Trust 2026
DESCRIPTION:We are grateful to Marjorie Glasgow BEM\, Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire and Patron of the Trust\, and to the Ditchley Foundation Trust\, for arranging for us to meet as their guests this year at Ditchley Park. \nOur business will\, as usual\, be a review of the Trust’s work in the year. Our President\, the Bishop of Dorchester\, will be in the Chair. \nDitchley is a fine\, Grade-I listed\, house by James Gibbs and Francis Smith built in 1722 in extensive parkland. It was used in WWII by Sir Winston Churchill as a country residence close to Blenheim. \nArrivals: from 3:30 pm – tea and biscuits will be provided.\nMeeting: 4:00 – 5:00 pm \nAfter the meeting\, there will be a reception during which there will be the opportunity to take a conducted tour of the house. \nEarly booking is advised as space for the meeting in the Ditchley State Room is limited. Attending the meeting is free of charge\, but there will be a small charge for those who book to stay for the reception and tour. Once booking is closed\, full joining instructions will be sent to all who have booked. \nThose with limited mobility should note that there is a flight of some 10 stone steps at the main entrance to reach the Hall and State Room for the meeting (there is an alternative route with a lift). There is\, however\, no lift to facilitate access to the first floor of the house for the tour. \nArrivals from 3.30 for 4 pm.

SUMMARY:Tour of the University Church\, Oxford
DESCRIPTION:Our long-standing Council Member\, Joanna Karmowska\, has kindly arranged a late afternoon guided tour of St Mary The Virgin Church\, the University Church\, in the centre of Oxford. This Oxford landmark is an outstandingly beautiful building (it is Grade I listed)\, and\, of course\, it is steeped in history – not least\, in 1555/6\, the trials of Latimer\, Ridley and Cranmer; and then the influence of Archbishop Laud who commissioned the new South Porch (controversially “Roman Catholic” in its design).  Our guide will be the Vicar\, William Lamb. The church is kindly offering us a glass of wine after the tour. \nFor those who are able to stay on\, there will be Sung Compline at 8:00 pm. \nPlease aim to arrive inside the church around 4:45 pm.

DESCRIPTION:‘A Place Most Royall’: the Tower of London and its Visitors\, 1500-2026 \nThis year’s lecture will describe the Tower and its visitors over some 500 years (one can’t help but think about the range of fates that befell the visitors……). Our lecturer will be Dr Edward Impey\, FSA\, FRHistS\, a distinguished historian and museum curator.  He was a curator of Historic Royal Palaces and\, for nine years until 2022\, he held the position of Master of the Armouries and Director General of the Royal Armouries (for which\, he was resident in the Tower). \nFollowing the Lecture\, as is our wont\, we shall adjourn for our accustomed evening drinks and canapés\, weather permitting\, on the lawn by the river. \nDo please bring guests and encourage your acquaintances to come: the Lecture is an excellent way of introducing potential new members to the Trust. \nLecture at 5:30 p.m: arrivals from 5:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:September 2025 Church Tour
DESCRIPTION:Our September Tour will be led by Elizabeth Knowles who has also used her deep knowledge of the county’s churches to produce cycling and walking routes for those seeking help in planning Ride+Stride. We shall first visit St John the Baptist\, Kingston Bagpuize and then move on to see St James the Great\, West Hanney; St Mary the Virgin\, Lyford; and St Peter’s Charney Bassett. These churches\, with their diverse features\, provide an overview of church history in this corner of what is now Oxfordshire but which used to be over the county border in Berkshire. We shall start the day with coffee at Kingston Bagpuize\, lunch has been arranged at The Plough in West Hanney\, and Charney Bassett is offering us a cup of tea. \nSimple joining instructions and a sketch of the route between the churches will be sent to all who have booked in the week before the tour.  All these churches are fairly easily accessible (Lyford has no lavatory\, and Charney Bassett has only basic toilet facilities).

SUMMARY:Blenheim Lecture - Thursday 17th October
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted that Dame Fiona Reynolds has agreed to give this year’s Blenheim Lecture:\nThe Fight for Beauty: Why beauty matters and should shape our future decisions. \nDame Fiona had a long career in conservation culminating in 12 years as Director-General of the National Trust from 2001-2012.  She is fascinated by how the need for beauty in people’s lives drove the founders of the National Trust yet is almost invisible in public policy today.  She wrote her book The Fight for Beauty to make the case for its return to centre stage.  She is now Chair of the Royal Agricultural University in Cirencester and the Cathedrals Fabric Commission for England among other non-executive roles and is working for beauty and sustainability to help shape a better future for all. \nI am pleased that we can return to our normal arrangements this year and start with a reception (arrive from 6:15) followed by a sit-down buffet supper in the Palace Orangery. The Lecture will run from shortly after 8:00 pm for about an hour. \nAs always\, we are grateful to His Grace the Duke of Marlborough for making the Palace available to us for this event. \nImage: by Marcus Ginns

SUMMARY:Saturday Church Tour - The Churn Benefice - September 21st
DESCRIPTION:David writes: \n“This year’s autumn tours are to two Grade I and two Grade II* listed churches in the Churn Benefice under the Berkshire Downs.  As usual\, the repeats of the tour will take place on the Friday and the Saturday: this booking page is for Saturday September 21st only. (Go back to ‘Events’ for the separate page for the Friday tour.) \n“Churn Knob marks the start of the St Birinus pilgrimage walk to Dorchester.  For those who felt the spring tour was a bit of a gallop\, I am allowing more time to absorb these remarkable buildings.  No pilgrimage walk I am afraid!  That means a slightly earlier start than usual with coffee at 9:30am at St Mary the Virgin\, Upton.  We shall move on to see St Michael’s\, Aston Tirrold; All Saints’\, North Moreton; and St Michael and All Angels\, Blewbury. \n“Our pub lunch is yet to be arranged\, but will probably be at North Moreton. As usual\, the food is included in the ticket price\, and detailed arrangements will be confirmed a week in advance to those who have booked.”

SUMMARY:Autumn Church Tour - 16 September
DESCRIPTION:Joining instructions (time and place) and driving directions will be sent to participants after booking has closed.\nIdentical tours will be run on Friday\, September 15th and Saturday\, September 16th.\nThis booking page is for September 16th. \nI have chosen five of the small churches in the Shill Valley and Broadshire Benefice for this year’s autumn tour. They range from early Saxon through to late Victorian\, starting with St Georges Kelmscott\, birthplace of The Society for the Protection of Ancient buildings and largely untouched thanks to William Morris.  St Mary’s Holwell is home to the youngest of the five and is a fine example of late Gothic revival. \nBetween these two we shall visit St Matthew’s Langford with its delightful pub\, the Bell\, for lunch\, SS Peter and Paul Broadwell and St Georges Kencot. \nThere are numerous surprises in all of these and I very much look forward to seeing you in September\, especially those who could not make the Spring Tour. \nDavid Warr

SUMMARY:A Recusant Window: Childrey's lost pre-refromation window rediscovered
DESCRIPTION:Presentation by Iona Hart MA (Conservation of Stained Glass and Heritage Management) \nFive hundred years ago the rich Fettiplace family had a beautiful stained-glass window made for their chantry chapel in the South Transept of St Mary’s Church.\nNot much over a century later\, Cromwell’s puritan soldiers smashed it up when they stabled their horses in the church during the civil war. Ever since\, the window has been plain glass.\nThe stained glass was thought to have disappeared – so how did it come to turn up in Yorkshire?\nResearcher Iona Hart is coming to Childrey to discuss her discovery in more detail and to unveil the large photograph we have had made of it to be displayed close to the place where the glass used to be. \nCome and hear how a mystery from the time of the civil war has now been solved! \nThis talk has been arranged by St Mary’s Childrey which has been supported by OHCT in the past.  Our Members will be welcome with no need either to book or to pay.
