SUMMARY:Spring 2025 Church Tour
DESCRIPTION:Clive Fewins will lead us to four churches west of Oxford: St Giles’\, Standlake; St Michael’s\, Stanton Harcourt; St Mary’s\, Cumnor; and St Nicholas’\, Fyfield.  Standlake nave has a remarkable Victorian roof carved with angels bearing the Signs of the Passion\, Stanton Harcourt has a fine C13 chancel screen\, some very fine tombs and Henry Tudor’s standard carried at Bosworth by Sir Robert Harcourt.  After lunch in the Harcourt Arms\, we shall go to Cumnor with its magnificent wooden tower staircase and to Fyfield with its open-sided tomb displaying the corpse of a C15 Lord of the Manor. \nFull joining instructions and a driving route will be emailed a week in advance to those who have booked. \nThe Trust is indebted to Clive for arranging this year’s May Tour following the sad death David Warr at the end of last year.

SUMMARY:Blenheim Lecture - Thursday 17th October
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted that Dame Fiona Reynolds has agreed to give this year’s Blenheim Lecture:\nThe Fight for Beauty: Why beauty matters and should shape our future decisions. \nDame Fiona had a long career in conservation culminating in 12 years as Director-General of the National Trust from 2001-2012.  She is fascinated by how the need for beauty in people’s lives drove the founders of the National Trust yet is almost invisible in public policy today.  She wrote her book The Fight for Beauty to make the case for its return to centre stage.  She is now Chair of the Royal Agricultural University in Cirencester and the Cathedrals Fabric Commission for England among other non-executive roles and is working for beauty and sustainability to help shape a better future for all. \nI am pleased that we can return to our normal arrangements this year and start with a reception (arrive from 6:15) followed by a sit-down buffet supper in the Palace Orangery. The Lecture will run from shortly after 8:00 pm for about an hour. \nAs always\, we are grateful to His Grace the Duke of Marlborough for making the Palace available to us for this event. \nImage: by Marcus Ginns

SUMMARY:Saturday Church Tour - The Churn Benefice - September 21st
DESCRIPTION:David writes: \n“This year’s autumn tours are to two Grade I and two Grade II* listed churches in the Churn Benefice under the Berkshire Downs.  As usual\, the repeats of the tour will take place on the Friday and the Saturday: this booking page is for Saturday September 21st only. (Go back to ‘Events’ for the separate page for the Friday tour.) \n“Churn Knob marks the start of the St Birinus pilgrimage walk to Dorchester.  For those who felt the spring tour was a bit of a gallop\, I am allowing more time to absorb these remarkable buildings.  No pilgrimage walk I am afraid!  That means a slightly earlier start than usual with coffee at 9:30am at St Mary the Virgin\, Upton.  We shall move on to see St Michael’s\, Aston Tirrold; All Saints’\, North Moreton; and St Michael and All Angels\, Blewbury. \n“Our pub lunch is yet to be arranged\, but will probably be at North Moreton. As usual\, the food is included in the ticket price\, and detailed arrangements will be confirmed a week in advance to those who have booked.”

SUMMARY:Blenheim Lecture 2023
DESCRIPTION:We are fortunate that the distinguished ecclesiastical historian\, Prof. Sir Diarmaid MacCulloch\, has agreed to give us a talk: Right in front of your eyes – a new view of the Reformation.  \nSir Diarmaid\, is an engaging speaker\, well-known for his many television programmes on church history and also for his writing – including his recent biography of Thomas Cromwell. Book now: tickets £35. \nAs always\, we are grateful to His Grace the Duke of Marlborough for making the Palace available to us for this event.  \nPlease note\nBecause of extensive renovations to the Orangery\, we cannot have a sit-down supper before the lecture this year: instead\, drinks and canapés will be served in the Colonnades. Though seating in the Colonnades will be limited\, we shall open the Marlborough Room (where the lecture takes place) as early as possible once the sound system and projection have been set up to provide additional seating during the reception. The lecture will start at about 7:00 pm.

SUMMARY:Autumn Church Tour - 16 September
DESCRIPTION:Joining instructions (time and place) and driving directions will be sent to participants after booking has closed.\nIdentical tours will be run on Friday\, September 15th and Saturday\, September 16th.\nThis booking page is for September 16th. \nI have chosen five of the small churches in the Shill Valley and Broadshire Benefice for this year’s autumn tour. They range from early Saxon through to late Victorian\, starting with St Georges Kelmscott\, birthplace of The Society for the Protection of Ancient buildings and largely untouched thanks to William Morris.  St Mary’s Holwell is home to the youngest of the five and is a fine example of late Gothic revival. \nBetween these two we shall visit St Matthew’s Langford with its delightful pub\, the Bell\, for lunch\, SS Peter and Paul Broadwell and St Georges Kencot. \nThere are numerous surprises in all of these and I very much look forward to seeing you in September\, especially those who could not make the Spring Tour. \nDavid Warr

SUMMARY:A Recusant Window: Childrey's lost pre-refromation window rediscovered
DESCRIPTION:Presentation by Iona Hart MA (Conservation of Stained Glass and Heritage Management) \nFive hundred years ago the rich Fettiplace family had a beautiful stained-glass window made for their chantry chapel in the South Transept of St Mary’s Church.\nNot much over a century later\, Cromwell’s puritan soldiers smashed it up when they stabled their horses in the church during the civil war. Ever since\, the window has been plain glass.\nThe stained glass was thought to have disappeared – so how did it come to turn up in Yorkshire?\nResearcher Iona Hart is coming to Childrey to discuss her discovery in more detail and to unveil the large photograph we have had made of it to be displayed close to the place where the glass used to be. \nCome and hear how a mystery from the time of the civil war has now been solved! \nThis talk has been arranged by St Mary’s Childrey which has been supported by OHCT in the past.  Our Members will be welcome with no need either to book or to pay.

SUMMARY:Tour of Rhodes House
DESCRIPTION:This tour has been arranged by Charles Baker\, who was the Trust’s President (2021-2022).  He is the grandson of Sir Herbert Baker\, the architect of the original Rhodes House buildings.  The Oxford home of the Rhodes Trust\, a fine Grade II* listed building\, was built in the 1920s. It has just undergone a substantial renovation with the clever addition of new space in a basement and in the gardens. This tour will be a delight for all with an interest in 20th– and 21st-century architecture. Afternoon tea is included. \nCharles writes: \n“Do come and join us. We shall be one of the first groups to visit after the major transformation project that is currently underway. This will enable Rhodes House Trust to expand its celebrated global scholarship programme by providing much-needed convening facilities\, new offices\, and residential accommodation. I am particularly keen to see how they have updated and respected the work of the original architect 100 years ago.” \nThe tour will be followed by afternoon tea. \nIf all the available places are taken\, and you are disappointed\, do please email Charles Baker to say how many tickets you would like\, and if there is sufficient demand\, we shall try to arrange a repeat of this tour. \nPlease note that nearby parking is very limited and that the building is being made easily accessible for all. \nCredit: Photos courtesy of Fisher Studios\, Oxford.

SUMMARY:Four churches of the Akeman Benefice - 20 May
DESCRIPTION:Joining instructions (time and place) and driving directions will be sent to participants after booking has closed.  Identical tours will be run on Friday\, May 19th and Saturday\, May 20th: this booking page is for May 20th. \nWe shall start at All Saints\, Middleton Stoney and drive south to see the churches at Kirtlington\, Bletchingdon\, and Hampton Gay.  All Saints\, Middleton Stoney\, a Grade 2* building within the Jersey Estate\, dates from the mid-12th century and\, like so many\, has undergone a number of restorations over time.  Saint Mary the Virgin (Grade 2*) in Kirtlington is another C12 foundation much restored over the centuries and latterly by Benjamin Ferry (the tower rebuild) and by Sir George Gilbert Scott (the Chancel).  Lunch (food covered by the tour price) will be provided in the Oxford Arms in Kirtlington.  After lunch: Saint Giles\, Bletchingdon (Grade 2*).  As a young man\, Christopher Wren lived at The Rectory with his family after his father was deprived of his living by the Puritans\, his sister having married the then Rector\, William Holder.  Charles Buckeridge designed the north aisle\, which was added in about 1869. The church was heavily restored to Buckeridge’s designs in 1878.  And finally\, to Saint Giles\, Hampton Gay. (Grade 2*)\, a beautiful little church resulting from a comprehensive rebuild in the 18th century that attracted criticism from the Gothic revivalists in the 19th century for being too Georgian!

SUMMARY:Visit to Chalgrove
DESCRIPTION:I am delighted to announce that thanks to generous flexibility by St Mary’s Church\, Rachel Jacques at Chalgrove Manor and The Red Lon pub where we will have lunch\, this visit will now take place on SATURDAY 15 OCTOBER.   The arrangements are as for the original date – with half the group visiting the church in the morning and the Manor after lunch and the other half vica versa.   I will confirm which group you are in in my joining letter.   Either way\, we will be meeting at 10 am. The cost Is £35 per head\, including lunch but not drinks. \n  \nI am delighted to let you know that through the good offices of Charles Baker (President of OHCT 2021-22) the autumn tour for 2022 will take place in Chalgrove on 16th September.  The visit will comprise two venues. By kind permission of Rachel Jacques\, we will be given a guided tour of Chalgrove Manor\, a 15th/16th century half-timbered Grade 1 listed manor house lovingly restored by Rachel and her family.  The other venue will be the church of St Mary\, which has undergone a large restoration project focusing mainly on a series of exquisite wall paintings. \nThe day will be limited to 40 people divided into two groups.  One group will visit the Manor in the morning and the other group\, the church paintings.  We all gather for lunch at the Red Lion in the village\, and in the afternoon\, the groups swap venues.  This should prove to be an interesting if slightly different format to most of my tours\, and because of limited numbers\, I do recommend early booking to avoid disappointment. \nPlease note that good independent mobility is required. \nYou will receive final details a few days before our visit confirming which way round your day is planned – and confirming the location to meet. \nImage copyright John Ward \nTicket sales close at 8 am Wednesday\, 12 Oct.

SUMMARY:Evening Visit to Church Hanborough with Holly Kilpatrick
DESCRIPTION:Holly Kilpatrick is organising another of her popular evening visits to a church followed by a pub supper; this time to Church Hanborough on 11 August. We will be welcomed by local historian and OHCT member\, Richard Wilkins\, who will tell us about the church and its hidden treasures and a big Civil War story\, before we all move to the Hand and Shears for a convivial pub supper. Places are limited by the size of the pub\, so do not delay booking at £26 a head (includes food but not drink).   \nPlease note there is limited parking by the church\, but more is available on the main road
