SUMMARY:Walking Tour of Dorchester
DESCRIPTION:EVENT POSTPONED \nWe regret that\, due to illness\, Malcolm Airs will be unable to conduct the Dorchester guided walk on 1 September. We hope to reschedule the walk at a later date and will contact you once that date has been fixed. You will have priority for reservation for that date but\, if you are do not wish to participate\, your payment will be reimbursed. \n  \nProfessor Malcolm Airs will lead a tour of Dorchester’s domestic architecture. Dorchester probably has more listed buildings than any other village of comparable size in the county. The walk will focus on the buildings that line the High Street and will explore the wide variety of building materials and architectural styles that have been employed from the Middle Ages to the present day. Malcolm (who is now one of our trustees) is one of this country’s leading architectural historians. He has lived in Dorchester for 40 years and at one stage was the local Conservation Officer. His intimate local knowledge will reveal a history which is often hidden from public view. Those who wish will be able to have tea afterwards either in the Abbey tea rooms or Lily’s in the High Street.

SUMMARY:English Chapels and Meeting Houses with Christopher Wakeling
DESCRIPTION:From great city tabernacles to tiny wayside chapels\, the Nonconformists’ important contribution to this country’s architecture is increasingly vulnerable.  Christopher Wakeling’s recent book Chapels of England is the first substantial history of nonconformist church architecture in England.  In this talk he considers some of the ways in which these buildings can be understood\, and touches on the present challenges facing the people who care for them. \nDr Christopher Wakeling\, who has taught at Keele University for many years\, is an art historian with a special interest in the buildings of the nonconformist denominations. Until 2016 he chaired the Places of Worship Forum at Historic England; he is a former President of the Chapels Society and former chair of the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain. SUMMARY:Blenheim Lecture with Dr David Starkey 'England’s Brexit under Henry VIII'
DESCRIPTION:Our speaker is Dr David Starkey CBE FSA RHistS\, the noted constitutional historian\, radio and television presenter and controversialist. His academic specialisation is in Tudor history\, and he will give this a contemporary twist by speaking on “England’s Brexit under Henry VIII”. This will not only be topical in terms of current politics but it will also be very relevant to the history of our churches. This combination of speaker and topic means that this year there will probably be particularly keen demand for places. Doors open at 6.30. Drinks\, finger buffet and lecture £30. Book early to avoid disappointment!\nPlease note that we have a bug in the system\, the event venue is Blenheim Palace (not Goring)

SUMMARY:Victorian Gothic Diversity. Visit three churches with Peter Hughes
DESCRIPTION:With Peter Hughes on Saturday 16 September you can enjoy three extraordinarily different Victorian Gothic churches in West Oxfordshire.  St Mary’s Freeland (1866-71) is an extravaganza of high church decoration orchestrated by J L Pearson (who also designed St.Augustine\, Kilburn\, and Truro Cathedral). The mural decoration and stained glass are by the well-known firm of Clayton and Bell. (The depiction of the Flight into Egypt featured on our Christmas card in 2015). We then go on to the exactly contemporary but very different St Michael’s in Leafield (1860-74) by Sir George Gilbert Scott. This is large and austere and relies for its impact on architectural form\, not surface decoration. Finally after a pub lunch  we visit the very peculiar but again contemporary St John the Evangelist in Hailey\, designed by Clapton Crabbe Rolfe\, the 21-year old son of the vicar. It was described at the time by the diocesan architect\, G.E. Street\, as ‘needlessly eccentric’\, and in her Guide to the Churches of Oxfordshire Jennifer Sherwood describes it as undigested High Victorian brutalism. All this at a cost of £20 (to include pub lunch but not drinks)

SUMMARY:Christianity in the Middle East: Reasons for Hope & Despair
DESCRIPTION:Christianity in the Middle East: Reasons for Hope & Despair Wolfson Lecture by Gerard Russell MBE \nOur Chairman writes: our lecturer Gerard Russell is now a writer and strategic consultant but was formerly a colleague of mine in the Diplomatic Service. He speaks Arabic and Dari and has lived and worked in Cairo\, Jerusalem\, Baghdad\, Kabul\, and Jeddah. In 2014 to critical acclaim he published Heirs to Forgotten Kingdoms; Journeys into the Disappearing Religions of the Middle East. I am sure that he will be happy to answer questions about the Yazidis\, Mandaeans or Samaritans but for his talk he has chosen the title “Christianity in the Middle East: Reasons for Hope and Despair” . Sadly it is a very topical subject and I am sure that it will be a fascinating evening\nThe lecture will be followed by a reception. If the weather is fine I hope we can be down on the lawns by the river. That should be quite lovely. The lecture itself\, however\, will be the main attraction.

DESCRIPTION:Please note that this event is now FULLY BOOKED \nOn 19 and 20 May David Warr is leading another of his very popular church tours but this time he will be accompanied by Charles Mould who will also be talking about and playing the various organs en route.  Blenheim are very kindly letting us in specially to listen to a demonstration of the magnificent Father Willis organ in the even more magnificent Library. That will be a particularly rare privilege. We go on from there to lovely Great Tew – which has the sad distinction of having suffered three lead thefts from its roof – and the interesting Blomfield church at Heythrop. \n
