About this church

The earliest parts of the church were built in 12th century; the chancel arch, North aisle and three-bay arcade added in a transitional style between Norman and Early English Gothic. In 14th century the South aisle and two-bay arcade were added. The Clerestory is 15th century. In 1805 a transeptal mausoleum was added to the North side of the chancel for the Child-Villiers family. In 1858 the church was restored by Samuel Sanders Teulon who rebuilt the West tower and made stylistic architectural changes to the Jersey Chapel mausoleum. In 1868 the church was refitted to designs by G E Street.
The font in the church is reputed to be from the Royal House of Wessex at Islip (demolished in 1780s), bearing an inscription claiming it to be used for the baptism of Edward the Confessor (c.1003-66). The font may possibly be Saxon in origin but Gothicised in the C14.
