Shrivenham : St Andrew

This large cruciform building – with the exception of the tower – was built during the reign of Charles I (1625-49), at a time when there was very little in the way of church building in England. It is an unusual merging of late Perpendicular and Classical architectural styles.

About this church

The fine 15th-century tower remains but the rest of the church was rebuilt in the 17th century, with the tower placed centrally in the structure of the building. The interior pillars do not conform to the normal style as they are fatter at the top than the bottom. There are some good monuments to the Barrington family and a fine ‘perspective’ pulpit and tester from the 17th century.
