Swalcliffe : St Peter and St Paul

An interesting church built of Hornton Limestone in the ironstone country near Banbury.Parts date back to Saxon times (eg 2 small windows and the nave). The church was added to by the Normans, and in the 14th Century it was endowed by William Wykeham, Bishop of Winchester. The Tower dates from late 13th Century.

About this church

The church was altered and enlarged in the 13th and 14th centuries, when the Wykeham family from nearby Broughton Castle used it as a family burial place.

There are some unusual Jacobean double doors, and further 17th century wood work inside.

The great Tithe Barn to the west of the church is 15th century.
