Swinbrook : St Mary

The church is Decorated and Perpendicular, with a late Georgian tower, built in six weeks in 1822.

About this church

The church contains Transitional nave arcades and a crossing with incised capitals. Also medieval misericords. In the south aisle a window contains fragments of ancient glass shattered by a wartime bomb. By far the most interesting feature are the eccentric tombs of the Swinbrook Fettiplaces – six effigies in two triple tiers. One of two sanctuary brasses is to Anthony Fettiplace (d.1509).
Near the porch are headstones to three of the Mitford sisters, Nancy, Unity and Diana Mitford. Their parents (the Redesdales), and a fourth sister Pamela, are buried elsewhere in the churchyard. There is a plaque to their brother, Tom, inside the church.
