A Recusant Window: Childrey’s lost pre-refromation window rediscovered

29th July 2023 @ 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Presentation by Iona Hart MA (Conservation of Stained Glass and Heritage Management)

Five hundred years ago the rich Fettiplace family had a beautiful stained-glass window made for their chantry chapel in the South Transept of St Mary’s Church.
Not much over a century later, Cromwell’s puritan soldiers smashed it up when they stabled their horses in the church during the civil war. Ever since, the window has been plain glass.
The stained glass was thought to have disappeared – so how did it come to turn up in Yorkshire?
Researcher Iona Hart is coming to Childrey to discuss her discovery in more detail and to unveil the large photograph we have had made of it to be displayed close to the place where the glass used to be.

Come and hear how a mystery from the time of the civil war has now been solved!

This talk has been arranged by St Mary’s Childrey which has been supported by OHCT in the past.  Our Members will be welcome with no need either to book or to pay.
