We visited this exquisite private chapel after our Annual Meeting. Our hosts on that occasion have asked if there might be people living within reach of Rycote who would, please, like to help next year as Custodians.
Sarah and Bernard Taylor, who own the Chapel, are looking for Custodians to help with opening the Chapel to the public for the 2025 season and beyond. Sarah writes:
“Opening times are 1.30pm-5.30pm, Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons, April to September. We generally operate a rota through the season, which the custodians agree between themselves and Mrs Taylor. There is a small stipend attached to the role.
“Rycote Chapel is a rare and serene survivor, predating the Tudor house next to it which was substantially destroyed in 1807. It was built by Richard and Sybil Quartermain, consecrated in 1449 and dedicated to St Michael and All Angels. The chapel is Perpendicular in style and on the outside barely changed from its original construction. It has remarkable interior fittings, which include the two early 17th century pews which are sumptuously decorated and a magnificent reredos carved in the manner of Grinling Gibbons.”
