English Chapels and Meeting Houses with Christopher Wakeling

5th March 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

From great city tabernacles to tiny wayside chapels, the Nonconformists’ important contribution to this country’s architecture is increasingly vulnerable.  Christopher Wakeling’s recent book Chapels of England is the first substantial history of nonconformist church architecture in England.  In this talk he considers some of the ways in which these buildings can be understood, and touches on the present challenges facing the people who care for them.

Dr Christopher Wakeling, who has taught at Keele University for many years, is an art historian with a special interest in the buildings of the nonconformist denominations. Until 2016 he chaired the Places of Worship Forum at Historic England; he is a former President of the Chapels Society and former chair of the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain. Christopher is a Trustee of Historic Chapels Trust

Tickets cost £10
