At the Oxfordshire Historic Churches Trust, we believe Ride + Stride is for everyone. Each September, people of all ages and abilities take part in this much-loved event, exploring our county’s churches and chapels while raising vital funds for their preservation. For some, that journey is taken on foot or by bicycle. For others – like Philippa Randles – it’s on a mobility scooter.
Philippa first joined Ride + Stride in 2013, accompanied by friends on a short route. Since then, she has become a regular and determined participant. Apart from one year in 2016, she has taken part every year – including during the restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic, when she was joined by her friend Eluned walking alongside her.
This September will mark Philippa’s twelfth Ride + Stride, a milestone she approaches with her trademark enthusiasm. “It’s always great fun,” she says, “and lovely to meet other Riders and Striders.” In recent years, her route has been completed in the company of a fellow parishioner from St Nicolas Church, who accompanies her on foot. Philippa hopes they will travel together again this year, weather permitting.
Her commitment to Ride + Stride is a reminder that the event is not defined by speed or distance, but by participation and shared purpose. For Philippa, the mobility scooter is not a limitation but a means of joining in – ensuring she can contribute to the cause, enjoy the camaraderie, and experience Oxfordshire’s rich ecclesiastical heritage first-hand.
Ride + Stride is designed to be as accessible as possible. Routes can be tailored to individual needs, and the event is open to walkers, cyclists, horse riders, wheelchair users, and mobility scooter riders alike. Those who prefer not to travel between churches can also take part as Church Welcomers, greeting participants and signing sponsorship forms.
Philippa’s story is an encouragement to anyone who may hesitate to join in due to mobility challenges. “Anything I can do to help promote Ride + Stride and encourage those with disabilities to take part is most welcome,” she says.
This year’s Ride + Stride takes place on Saturday 13th September 2025. As ever, sponsorship will be shared equally between participants’ chosen churches and the work of OHCT across the county.
Philippa proves that there is no single way to take part – only a shared goal: to celebrate, enjoy, and safeguard Oxfordshire’s historic places of worship for generations to come.
