The internal renovation of the chapel has achieved practical completion and the church are planning to move services back to the chapel for Easter. A Re-opening Celebration will be held on Sunday 1st June at 3pm. We wish to thank everyone who has supported us through prayer, fundraising, donations, and also to the Oxfordshire Historic Churches Trust one of a number of generous grantors.
As a result of numerous delays and unforeseen issues it has taken us almost two years of renovation work. The drainage had to be re-laid, and the internal floors lowered and levelled to provide a flat surface from the external path through the building. New energy efficient lighting and heating has been installed providing flexibility and reducing running costs.
The chapel now has external glazed porch doors, and new internal glazed doors allowing light to floor through the porch into the rear of the chapel.
Despite the trials and tribulations, the internal works have totally transformed our chapel into a bright and warm space whilst maintaining the simplistic Georgian style for a Baptist chapel.
The Grade II listed chapel is one of the oldest in existence, tracing its roots back to the 1640s. It was rebuilt in 1781 on a plot first made available to Baptists in 1714 by a generous bequest. The Victorian box pews were removed in 1970s but the balcony set on cast iron columns (also Victorian) still remains.
